Gender Identity:
It must be difficult for the people who play to the extreme of their gender identity.  People with an inflexible image of themselves - whether it is defined by race, gender or organization - are challenged every day by the existence of so much grey area.  The myth of race purity was busted long ago.  Nationalism was exposed for the self-centered ignorance it perpetuates.  Perhaps how we identify expressions of gender will continue to broaden as well.
Studying the movement of my body has brought forth the possibility of what is considered feminine in my own, masculine body.  My training in dance never got to the point of unabashed self-expression.  The choreography was always too direct.  However, through movement, I have found deeply-suppressed feminine expression.  Because movement is how we do anything in this world, including forming our identity, this awareness has had an impact on how I engage the world.
It’s sad that physical education in America is so inert that the curriculum doesn’t encourage creativity and exploration.  Men would be less stifled.  Women would be more open-minded.  Self-awareness is the key.  With enough time, the rigid rules of acceptable expression would allow for a broader vocabulary.  Diversity is the goal.  It is always the answer.
