Real silence is explosive; it is not the dead state of mind that spiritual seekers think. This is volcanic in its nature; it’s bubbling all the time—the energy, the life—that is its quality.
U.G. Krishnamurti
Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light-years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual. So are our emotions in the presence of great art or music or literature, or acts of exemplary selfless courage such as those of Mohandas Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr. The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both.

Simply Orthodox ☦: The Sign of the Cross

A thoughtful ritual, a physical reminder, regardless of the form, is a tool for reminding ourselves what’s important in life.

The Elder wrote about [the sign of the Cross] to one of his spiritual daughters: The experience of the ages shows that the sign of the cross has great power over all a person’s actions during the entire course of his life. Therefore it is necessary to strive to root in children the habit of protecting themselves with the sign of the cross often, especially when receiving food and drink, and going to bed and waking up, before departing somewhere in a vehicle, before leaving and entering and place; and they should not make the sign carelessly or according to fashion, but precisely, beginning with the forehead to the solar plexus, then to both shoulders, so that a proper cross is produced… The sign of the cross has saved many from great dangers and afflictions.

~Elder Ambrose of Optina

I do not insist upon knowing.
André Breton, Nadja
In a period such as ours when only a comparatively few individuals seem to be given to religion, some form other than the Gothic cathedral must be found. Industry concerns the greatest numbers—it may be true, as has been said, that our factories are our substitute for religious expression.
Charles Sheeler, 1938

“In This World of onrushing events, the act of meditation—even just a “one-breath” meditation—straightening the back, clearing the mind for a moment—is a refreshing island in the stream. Although the term meditation has mystical and religious connotations for many people, it is a simple and plain activity.”

First forgive the silence
That answers prayer,
Then forgive the prayer
That stains the silence.
Mark Jarman, from “Five Psalms” (via proustitute)
Where does one go from a world of insanity? Somewhere on the other side of despair.
T.S. Eliot
If I were to say ‘I know God’, I would be a liar. God is beyond comprehension. Better to be silent and live in humility. If I were to say, ‘I do not know God’, I would also be a liar.
